Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Surgical Management
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Tuboovarian abscess (TOA) is a serious gynecological infection.
  • Postmenopausal women present unique challenges in TOA diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the surgical management of tuboovarian abscesses in postmenopausal women.
  • To identify factors influencing surgical outcomes and complications.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series of 20 postmenopausal women with TOA.
  • Surgical management, including diagnostic studies (laboratory, sonography, radiography).

Main Results:

  • Fever and lower abdominal pain were common symptoms.
  • Half of patients experienced postmenopausal bleeding or discharge.
  • Ruptured abscesses led to prolonged hospitalization and complications (bowel injury, wound infection, fistula, stricture).
  • Early detection and treatment of unruptured TOA resulted in fewer complications and shorter hospital stays.

Conclusions:

  • Septic conditions and suspected ruptured abscesses necessitate immediate surgical intervention.
  • Timely diagnosis and treatment of unruptured TOA are associated with improved patient outcomes and reduced healthcare resource utilization.
