Summary

Electronystagmography revealed significant optokinetic nystagmus pathology in chronic schizophrenia patients during remission. Disturbances in fixation suppression of caloric nystagmus were noted in half the subjects.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry
  • Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Chronic schizophrenia is a complex neurological and psychiatric disorder.
  • Vestibulooculomotor and visuooculomotor reflexes are crucial for maintaining visual stability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate vestibulooculomotor and visuooculomotor reflex abnormalities in chronic schizophrenia patients.
  • To assess eye-tracking and caloric nystagmus responses in schizophrenia during remission.

Main Methods:

  • Electronystagmography was used to examine 20 chronic schizophrenia patients in remission.
  • Specific tests included eye-tracking with caloric modification and caloric stimulation.

Main Results:

  • Significant pathology of optokinetic nystagmus was observed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Disturbances in the suppression effect of fixation on caloric nystagmus occurred in 50% of patients.
  • No canal paresis was detected, with minimal directional preponderance.
  • Conclusions:

    • Electronystagmography can reveal significant oculomotor disturbances in chronic schizophrenia, even during remission.
    • Abnormalities in optokinetic nystagmus and fixation suppression suggest underlying neurological deficits.
