Summary

Relapse prevention therapy categorizes relapse causes. Findings suggest social pressure relapses repeat, while negative affect and craving relapses are more severe. Craving relapses may decrease initially but return after a subsequent relapse.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Addiction Medicine
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Marlatt and Gordon's (1985) relapse prevention therapy is widely used.
  • Original models emphasized relapse precipitant categorization.
  • Recent therapy iterations focus more on coping strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report exploratory findings from a prospective alcohol treatment study.
  • To present a scoring algorithm for categorizing relapse precipitants.
  • To investigate the characteristics and patterns of different relapse types.

Main Methods:

  • Employed the Reasons for Drinking Questionnaire in a naturalistic alcohol treatment study.
  • Developed a scoring algorithm to categorize relapses into negative affect, social pressure, or craving/cued types.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Prospective data collection and analysis of relapse patterns.
  • Main Results:

    • Social pressure relapses were found to be more likely to repeat.
    • Negative affect and craving/cued relapses were associated with greater severity.
    • Craving/cued relapses initially decreased post-treatment but re-emerged after a subsequent relapse.

    Conclusions:

    • Relapse precipitants can be categorized, offering insights into treatment effectiveness.
    • Different relapse types have distinct patterns and implications for recovery.
    • Further research is needed to fully understand and address relapse dynamics in alcohol treatment.
