  • Imaging of 23 infants with presurgical clefts (11 UCL, 12 UCLP) and 21 noncleft controls.

    • Significant differences were observed in nasal width, alar wing length, and nasal tip displacement between UCLP and other groups.
    • Both UCL and UCLP groups exhibited distinct differences from controls and each other in nostril dimensions, alar angulation, columella angle, and alar base width.
    • Soft tissue defects and lip/philtrum lengths varied significantly across groups, including on the noncleft side.

    Conclusions:

    • Unilateral cleft lip (UCL) is not an appropriate control group for studies involving unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCLP).
    • Three-dimensional stereophotogrammetry provides accurate, repeatable measurements, overcoming limitations of direct infant facial measurements.
    • This advanced imaging technique aids surgeons in pre-operative planning and post-operative evaluation for cleft repair.
