Summary

Adolescent vaccination coverage for measles-mumps-rubella (MMR2) and hepatitis B (Hep B3) increased from 1996-1999. Larger managed care organizations (MCOs) and state immunization laws were linked to higher vaccination rates.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Vaccination coverage rates for adolescents in managed care organizations (MCOs) were previously unknown.
  • Understanding factors influencing adolescent immunization is crucial for public health initiatives.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze trends in two-dose measles-mumps-rubella (MMR2) and three-dose hepatitis B (Hep B3) vaccine receipt among U.S. adolescents in MCOs.
  • To identify MCO characteristics associated with higher vaccination rates.
  • To assess the impact of state middle school immunization requirements on adolescent vaccination coverage.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal and cross-sectional analyses of National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) data from 1996-1999.
  • Examined the relationship between MCO plan characteristics, state immunization laws, and adolescent vaccination coverage in 1999.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • MMR2 coverage increased from 56% (1996) to 64% (1999); Hep B3 coverage rose from 23% (1997) to 38% (1999).
  • Higher vaccination rates were observed in larger MCOs, those with top NCQA accreditation, plans in New England, and states with middle school immunization requirements.

Conclusions:

  • Adolescent immunization rates show improvement but remain below Healthy People 2010 goals.
  • State laws and MCO accreditation appear effective in boosting vaccination coverage.
  • Further research is needed to identify interventions to enhance adolescent vaccination rates.
