Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure and compare the mesopic contrast sensitivity function (mCSF) and visual acuity in normal and amblyopic eyes of children.
  • To investigate the relationship between visual acuity and mCSF across different spatial frequencies in amblyopic children.
  • To evaluate the potential of mCSF as an adjunctive tool for amblyopia assessment.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-one amblyopic children (strabismic and anisometropic) were tested using a visual acuity analyzer (ACV).
  • Mesopic contrast sensitivity was measured using standard optotypes at varying contrast levels (1%-99%) and spatial frequencies (0.6-30 cpd).
  • Comparisons were made between normal and amblyopic eyes, and across low, intermediate, and high spatial frequencies.

Main Results:

  • A decrease in visual acuity correlated with a decrease in mesopic contrast sensitivity.
  • Peak sensitivity occurred at similar spatial frequencies in both normal and amblyopic eyes.
  • Mesopic contrast sensitivity functions showed a greater reduction in intermediate spatial frequencies in amblyopic eyes compared to normal eyes.

Conclusions:

  • Mesopic contrast sensitivity is reduced in the amblyopic eyes of children.
  • The reduction is more pronounced at intermediate spatial frequencies under mesopic conditions.
  • Mesopic contrast sensitivity function shows promise as an additional measure for evaluating amblyopia.
