Summary

Siderosis bulbi (SB) can occur when iron-containing foreign bodies remain in the eye. Delayed treatment or missed diagnoses are key reasons for its development, even with prompt medical attention.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Trauma Surgery

Background:

  • Siderosis bulbi (SB) results from retained intraocular iron-containing foreign bodies.
  • This study retrospectively analyzed SB cases over a 10-year period to determine incidence and causes.

Observation:

  • 48 eyes with intraocular iron foreign bodies were surgically treated between 1992 and 2002.
  • Most foreign bodies (45 cases) were removed within 3 days, preventing SB.
  • Three patients (6.2%) presented late with established SB symptoms.

Findings:

  • Delayed presentation for treatment is a primary cause of siderosis bulbi.
  • Superficial initial medical evaluation can lead to overlooked foreign bodies.
  • Inadequate examination techniques may result in missed intraocular foreign bodies.

Implications:

  • Early detection and prompt removal of intraocular foreign bodies are crucial to prevent SB.
  • Improved diagnostic protocols are needed to minimize the risk of overlooking foreign bodies.
  • Sporadic cases of siderosis bulbi are likely to continue without enhanced vigilance.
