Summary

Men with eating disorders have distorted body fat perception, not different body fat ideals, compared to controls. This suggests altered self-perception is key to male eating disorders, impacting research and therapy.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Body Image Research

Background:

  • Eating disorders are increasingly recognized in men.
  • Distorted body image is a hallmark of eating disorders, but its specific components in men are less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To differentiate the roles of body fat ideals versus body fat perception in men with eating disorders.
  • To compare these factors between men with eating disorders, male athletes, and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the "somatomorphic matrix," a computerized body image assessment tool.
  • Compared 27 men with eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa) to 21 male mountain climbers and 21 control men.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Men with eating disorders and controls desired similar body fat ideals.
  • Men with eating disorders significantly overestimated their body fat (nearly double actual perception).
  • Control men showed minimal body fat perception distortion, similar to findings in women dieters.
  • Conclusions:

    • Distorted body fat perception, not unattainable body fat ideals, appears central to eating disorders in men.
    • This finding has implications for the understanding, research, and therapeutic approaches to male eating disorders.
