    Summary

Simultaneous radical nephrectomy with cholecystectomy or aortic repair is feasible. These combined procedures in renal cancer patients did not increase complications or hospital stay.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Surgical Oncology
    • Vascular Surgery

    Background:

    • Renal cancer treatment often involves radical nephrectomy.
    • Simultaneous surgical procedures may offer efficiency but require careful evaluation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the safety and feasibility of performing radical nephrectomy concurrently with cholecystectomy or abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.
    • To evaluate the impact of combined procedures on operative time, postoperative outcomes, and complication rates.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 18 patients undergoing radical nephrectomy combined with either cholecystectomy (n=14) or aortic repair (n=4).
    • All procedures utilized a transabdominal approach.
    • Operative times and postoperative data were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Combined procedures did not lead to an increased number of complications or prolonged hospital stay.
    • Cholecystectomy added 25-55 minutes, while aortic repair added 60-90 minutes to the operative duration.
    • A transabdominal approach is suitable for combined nephrectomy and cholecystectomy, but less convenient for aortic repair.

    Conclusions:

    • Radical nephrectomy can be safely combined with cholecystectomy or aortic repair in select renal cancer patients.
    • The choice of surgical approach is critical for optimizing the performance of combined procedures.
    • Concomitant operations do not negatively impact postoperative recovery or complication rates.
