Summary

Early postoperative capsular block syndrome (CBS) after cataract surgery rarely resolves spontaneously. Neodymium:YAG laser treatment effectively resolved CBS and normalized intraocular pressure in affected eyes.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Complications

Background:

  • Capsular block syndrome (CBS) is a rare complication following continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC) during cataract surgery.
  • Early identification and management of postoperative CBS are crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the clinical characteristics of early postoperative capsular block syndrome.
  • To evaluate the outcomes of interventions for early postoperative CBS.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of patients who developed early postoperative CBS after cataract surgery.
  • Phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation into the capsular bag was performed.
  • Neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser peripheral anterior capsulotomy or posterior capsulotomy was utilized for treatment.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Eight patients presented with shallow anterior chamber, anteriorly displaced IOL, distended capsular bag, and myopic shift within a week post-surgery.
  • One case involved secondary angle-closure glaucoma.
  • No cases of CBS resolved spontaneously; all required intervention.

Conclusions:

  • Postoperative capsular block syndrome typically does not resolve spontaneously.
  • Neodymium:YAG laser anterior or posterior capsulotomy proved successful in treating CBS and managing associated glaucoma.
