Photodynamic therapy for malignant biliary obstruction: a case series

Summary
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers a safe palliative option for elderly patients with bile duct carcinoma. This treatment, delivered via percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD), improved outcomes in select patients ineligible for surgery.

Implications:
- PDT via the PTBD route is a viable and safe palliative therapeutic strategy for selected elderly patients with advanced bile duct carcinoma.
- This approach may improve quality of life and performance status in patients unsuitable for conventional treatments.
- Further research is warranted to optimize PDT protocols and patient selection for bile duct carcinoma.
