Summary

Hypothyroidism is linked to Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Treating hypothyroidism with desiccated thyroid effectively improved OSA symptoms and oxygen saturation in patients, suggesting a cure for OSA when hypothyroidism is managed.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Sleep Medicine
  • Respiratory Medicine

Background:

  • Primary hypothyroidism is associated with various clinical features.
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder.
  • The interplay between hypothyroidism severity and OSA requires further investigation.

Observation:

  • This study analyzed 21 patients with primary hypothyroidism and OSA.
  • Patients were treated with desiccated thyroid, and polysomnography was performed before and after treatment.
  • Thyroid hormone levels and respiratory parameters were monitored.

Findings:

  • A significant correlation was observed between hypothyroidism and OSA, with 42.4% of patients exhibiting OSA.
  • Treatment with desiccated thyroid led to significant improvements in thyroid hormone levels (TT4, FT4I, TT3, TSH) and respiratory parameters (apnea time, respiratory disturbance index, lowest oxygen saturation).
  • Serum levels of TT4 and FT4I showed significant positive correlations with improved apnea and oxygen saturation metrics post-treatment.

Implications:

  • OSA in hypothyroid patients responds well to non-surgical treatment.
  • Effective management of hypothyroidism with desiccated thyroid can potentially cure OSA syndrome.
  • This highlights the importance of thyroid hormone assessment in OSA patients and vice versa.
