Background:

  • Thimerosal, an organic mercury compound, is used as a disinfectant and preservative.
  • Concerns exist regarding thimerosal's potential health effects, particularly in childhood vaccines.
  • Thimerosal is a known sensitizing agent, rarely causing systemic immune reactions like acrodynia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if thimerosal can induce systemic autoimmune conditions in genetically susceptible mice.
  • To compare the autoimmune response induced by thimerosal with that caused by inorganic mercury.

Main Methods:

  • A.SW mice were exposed to varying concentrations of thimerosal in drinking water for 70 days.
  • Assessed for antinucleolar antibodies (targeting fibrillarin), tissue immune-complex deposits, and serum immunoglobulin levels (IgE, IgG1, IgG2a).
