  • To explore the impact of comorbid depression on 5-HT(1A)R binding in PD.

  • Utilized positron emission tomography (PET) with the selective 5-HT(1A)R radioligand [18F]trans-4-fluoro-N-2-[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazin-1-yl]ethyl]-N-(2-pyridyl)cyclohexanecarboxamide (FCWAY).

    • Both PD patient groups showed significantly lower DV than healthy controls, indicating reduced 5-HT(1A)R availability.

    Conclusions:

    • Provides the first in vivo evidence for the involvement of serotonin type-1A receptors (5-HT(1A)R) in the pathophysiology of panic disorder (PD).
    • Reduced central 5-HT(1A)R availability is a potential neurobiological marker for PD.
    • Comorbid depression does not appear to significantly alter 5-HT(1A)R availability in PD patients.
