Transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) offers excellent results for local rectal adenoma resection and palliative rectal cancer treatment. However, its use for curative rectal cancer requires caution due to limited evidence.

Area of Science:

  • Colorectal surgery
  • Minimally invasive surgical techniques

Background:

  • Transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) is an emerging minimally invasive technique for rectal tumor resection.
  • The optimal role of TEM in rectal surgery requires further definition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the current literature on Transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM).
  • To define the place of TEM in the management of rectal tumors.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature review was conducted.

Main Results:

  • Local excision of rectal tumors demonstrates low mortality and morbidity.
  • TEM provides excellent visualization, enabling resection of larger and proximal tumors with minimal complications.

Related Experiment Videos

  • TEM is effective for rectal adenomas and palliative treatment of rectal cancer, with high rates of complete resection and low recurrence.
  • Conclusions:

    • Transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) is a highly effective technique for local resection of rectal adenomas and palliative treatment of rectal cancer.
    • Caution is advised when considering TEM for curative intent in rectal carcinomas due to limited long-term data.
    • Further scientific evidence is needed to fully compare TEM with other local techniques.
