Area of Science:

  • Optics
  • Interferometry
  • Diffraction Optics

Background:

  • Lau fringes are typically generated using spatially coherent or monochromatic light sources.
  • Achieving high-visibility Lau fringes with spatially incoherent and broadband light presents significant challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce a new optical assembly capable of producing Lau fringes under spatially incoherent illumination.
  • To demonstrate the feasibility of achieving high fringe visibility with broadband light in such a setup.

Main Methods:

  • Employing gratinglike codification of a spatially incoherent source.
  • Utilizing an achromatic Fresnel diffraction setup.

Main Results:

  • The proposed optical assembly successfully generates Lau fringes with spatially incoherent illumination.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Nearly 100% fringe visibility was achieved using broadband (white) light.
  • The setup's white-light capability contrasts with traditional monochromatic implementations.
  • Conclusions:

    • The developed optical assembly offers a novel approach to Lau fringe generation, overcoming limitations of previous methods.
    • The ability to use broadband light opens new avenues for applications requiring white-light interferometry.
