Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis frequently affects the elbow joint, causing pain and functional limitation.
  • Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) is a surgical option for end-stage rheumatoid arthritis of the elbow.
  • The Souter-Strathclyde unconstrained elbow prosthesis is one implant used for TEA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively evaluate the long-term clinical outcomes and survival rates of the Souter-Strathclyde unconstrained elbow prosthesis.
  • To identify factors associated with prosthesis failure, specifically humeral component loosening.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 36 patients (45 prostheses) with severe rheumatoid arthritis (Larsen grade 4-5).
