Background:

Ethnic minorities experience significant disparities in hospice care access compared to Caucasian populations.
A contributing factor to these disparities is identified as a lack of cultural competence among hospice care providers.
Addressing cultural competence is crucial for achieving equitable end-of-life care.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the level of cultural competence among hospice staff.
To identify factors influencing cultural competence in hospice settings.
To provide data for developing targeted interventions to enhance cultural competence.

Main Methods:

A descriptive, exploratory survey design was employed.
The survey was administered to 125 interdisciplinary hospice employees.
A total of 113 employees completed the survey, yielding a response rate of 90.4%.

Main Results:

Cultural competence behavior scores among hospice staff showed considerable variation.
Higher levels of education were associated with increased cultural competence scores.
Prior participation in cultural diversity training positively correlated with higher cultural competence.

Conclusions:

The study highlights significant variability in cultural competence within hospice workforces.
Increased education and diversity training are effective strategies for improving hospice staff cultural competence.
Findings can inform the development of interventions to promote culturally appropriate end-of-life care for diverse populations.
