Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Addiction Medicine
  • Clinical Trials

Background:

  • Smoking remains a leading cause of preventable death.
  • Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a standard smoking cessation aid.
  • Novel pharmacological interventions are needed to improve cessation success rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of naltrexone in combination with NRT for smoking cessation.
  • To assess naltrexone's effects on abstinence, relapse, craving, and weight gain.

Main Methods:

  • A preliminary, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
  • 32 smokers (1-1.5 packs/day) received either 50 mg naltrexone or placebo with nicotine patch therapy.
  • Continuous abstinence rates, relapse likelihood, desire to smoke, and weight changes were measured.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Naltrexone group showed higher continuous abstinence rates (9/16 vs. 5/16).
  • Naltrexone reduced relapse risk in participants who smoked during week one.
  • Naltrexone decreased desire to smoke and prevented post-cessation weight gain.

Conclusions:

  • Naltrexone augmentation of nicotine patch therapy may be beneficial for smoking cessation.
  • Optimized concurrent use of naltrexone and NRT warrants further investigation.
  • Naltrexone shows potential as an adjunct treatment for smoking cessation.
