Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Pediatric Cardiology
  • Congenital Heart Disease

Background:

  • Mitral-aortic atresia is a severe congenital heart malformation.
  • Situs inversus is a condition where major visceral organs are reversed from their normal positions.

Observation:

  • A newborn infant presented with a complex cardiac anomaly.
  • Two-dimensional echocardiography was utilized for diagnostic imaging.
  • Necropsy confirmed the echocardiographic findings.

Findings:

  • The patient was diagnosed with combined mitro-aortic atresia and situs inversus.
  • This represents the second documented case of this specific abnormality worldwide.
  • This is the first reported instance of this condition within the country.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of advanced imaging in diagnosing rare congenital heart defects.
  • Contributes to the limited existing literature on mitro-aortic atresia with situs inversus.
  • Emphasizes the need for increased awareness and reporting of such rare pediatric cardiac conditions.
