Area of Science:

  • Integrative medicine
  • Healthcare research
  • Patient-centered care

Background:

  • Growing global interest in complementary medicine necessitates understanding patient-practitioner interactions.
  • Need for data on complementary medicine use alongside conventional treatments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the utilization of complementary medications versus conventional treatments in Germany.
  • To analyze patient and practitioner perspectives on both treatment modalities.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective cohort study of 4178 patients and 218 practitioners across Germany (2001-2002).
  • Comparative analysis of prescription patterns, treatment satisfaction, adherence, and patient involvement.
  • Inclusion of practices focusing on conventional, complementary, or both medicine types.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Complementary medicine was preferred for patients under 18, over 65, women, and those with chronic conditions.
  • Patients on complementary medicine had more comorbidities, received more preparations, and had greater decision involvement.
  • Higher treatment satisfaction and tolerability observed with complementary therapies.
  • Joint patient-practitioner decision-making was more frequent for complementary medicine (40.8%) than conventional (25.8%).

Conclusions:

  • Complementary medicine is well-established in Germany, often integrated with conventional medicine.
  • Patients receiving complementary medicine report enhanced involvement in decision-making and greater treatment satisfaction.
