Abstract:
Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic infection which is endemic in India and Sri Lanka. Penile involvement in rhinosporidiosis is rare and we report one such case. The pathology, treatment and possible etiology of the condition are reviewed.
Insights
Rhinosporidiosis, a chronic infection common in India and Sri Lanka, rarely affects the penis. This case report details a rare instance of penile rhinosporidiosis, reviewing its pathology, treatment, and potential causes.
Area of Science:
- Medical Mycology
- Infectious Diseases
- Urology
Background:
- Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by *Rhinosporidium seeberi*.
- It is endemic in India and Sri Lanka, with mucocutaneous tissues being the most commonly affected sites.
- Penile involvement is exceptionally rare, with limited documented cases.
Observation:
- This report presents a unique case of penile rhinosporidiosis.
- The clinical presentation, diagnostic findings, and histopathological features of the penile lesion are described.
- The patient underwent surgical excision of the lesion.
Findings:
- The case highlights the unusual presentation of rhinosporidiosis in the penile region.
- Histopathology confirmed the presence of *Rhinosporidium seeberi* characteristic features.
- Review of literature indicates varied treatment modalities with recurrence being a concern.
Implications:
- This case expands the known spectrum of penile infections.
- It underscores the importance of considering rhinosporidiosis in endemic areas, even with atypical presentations.
- Further research into the etiology and optimal management of penile rhinosporidiosis is warranted.
