Summary

Food additives can trigger rhinitis symptoms in nonatopic individuals. A double-blind placebo-controlled study found that certain additives, like monosodium benzoate, caused objective and subjective rhinitis symptoms and reduced nasal airflow.

Background:

  • Limited literature exists on nonatopic persistent rhinitis triggered by food additives.
  • The impact of food additives on nasal peak inspiratory flow (NPIFR) in nonatopic individuals is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if nonatopic subjects with persistent rhinitis experience rhinitis symptoms after ingesting specific food additives.
  • To determine if food additive ingestion leads to a reduction in NPIFR.

Main Methods:

  • A double-blind placebo-controlled (DBPC) study was conducted on 226 patients (aged 12-60).
  • Participants underwent an additive-free diet, followed by challenges with a food additive-rich diet and then DBPC challenges with specific additives (tartrazine, erythrosine, monosodium benzoate, p-hydroxybenzoate, sodium metabisulphite, monosodium glutamate).

Main Results:

  • Twenty subjects (8.8%) reported symptom improvement after an additive-free diet.
  • Monosodium benzoate induced both objective (sneezing, rhinorrhoea) and subjective rhinitis symptoms with NPIFR reduction (>20%) in 20 challenges.
  • Subjective symptoms without significant NPIFR reduction occurred in 45 challenges across various additives.

Conclusions:

  • Nonatopic persistent rhinitis can be linked to frequent ingestion of specific, non-tolerated food additives.
  • Food additives act as triggers or aggravating factors, rather than primary etiological factors, in some cases of chronic vasomotor rhinitis.
