Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Clinical Research

Background:

  • Previous research on Tourette syndrome (TS) cognition focused on abstract tasks with inconsistent executive function findings.
  • This study investigates social functioning in TS, utilizing a problem-solving task sensitive to frontal lobe function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate social problem-solving skills in real-life scenarios for individuals with Tourette syndrome.
  • To compare social problem-solving abilities in TS patients against a healthy control group.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of TS participants without comorbidities was compared to matched healthy controls.
  • Participants completed an interpersonal problem-solving task with video scenarios and abstract executive function tests.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • TS participants demonstrated poorer performance in generating and selecting solutions for social problems compared to controls.
  • Individuals with TS also exhibited deficits in specific executive function tests.

Conclusions:

  • The findings indicate social and non-social cognitive challenges in Tourette syndrome.
  • This research deepens the understanding of TS and its impact on problem-solving capabilities.
