Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Idiopathic granulomatous inflammation (IGI) is a histopathologic variant of orbital pseudotumor.
  • IGI shares clinical presentation and treatment protocols with orbital pseudotumor.
  • Differential diagnosis for IGI includes sarcoidosis, Wegener's granulomatosis, trauma, and infection.

Observation:

  • A 77-year-old male patient presented with biopsy-proven lacrimal gland granulomatous inflammation.
  • The origin of the inflammation was unknown.

Findings:

  • Surgical debulking via an anterior orbitotomy was performed.
  • The management approach achieved a favorable clinical result.

Implications:

  • This case highlights successful surgical management for idiopathic granulomatous inflammation of the lacrimal gland.
