Long-term finasteride treatment significantly reduced acute urinary retention and surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). These benefits were sustained over six years in men with enlarged prostates.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in aging men.
  • Surgical intervention and acute urinary retention (AUR) are potential complications of BPH.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term efficacy of finasteride in reducing AUR and BPH-related surgery.
  • To assess the sustained effects of finasteride over a 6-year period.

Main Methods:

  • The Proscar Long-Term Efficacy and Safety Study (PLESS) involved 3040 men with symptomatic BPH.
  • Patients received either placebo or 5 mg finasteride daily for 4 years, followed by an optional 2-year open-label extension.
  • Outcomes included incidence of AUR and BPH-related surgery.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Finasteride treatment sustained the reduction in AUR and/or BPH-related surgery over 6 years.
  • Men switching from placebo to finasteride in the extension phase showed similar outcomes to the continuous finasteride group.
  • Conclusions:

    • Six-year data from PLESS confirm finasteride's sustained efficacy in decreasing AUR and BPH-related surgery.
    • Finasteride is an effective long-term treatment option for men with BPH and enlarged prostates.
