Summary

Truncal ligation of inferior thyroid arteries did not increase hypocalcemia after thyroidectomy. This surgical technique does not appear to cause parathyroid gland vascular insufficiency, thus avoiding post-operative low calcium levels.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of bilateral truncal ligation of inferior thyroid arteries on post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia.
  • To determine if this ligation technique contributes to parathyroid vascular insufficiency.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 80 patients undergoing bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy for non-toxic nodular goiter.
  • Patients were divided into two groups: 50 with bilateral inferior thyroid artery ligation and 30 without ligation.
  • Serum calcium levels were monitored preoperatively and on the first and second postoperative days.
