    Summary

    Platelets from individuals with Down syndrome (DS) show no significant differences in total or individual phospholipid composition compared to healthy controls. These findings suggest phospholipid alterations do not explain the reduced Na+/K+ ATPase activity in DS platelets.

    Background:

    • Down syndrome (DS) is associated with decreased Na+/K+ ATPase activity in platelets.
    • Platelet phospholipid composition plays a crucial role in membrane function and enzyme activity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate whether alterations in platelet phospholipid composition contribute to the reduced Na+/K+ ATPase activity observed in Down syndrome.
    • To compare the total and individual phospholipid profiles of platelets from DS subjects and healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Phospholipids were extracted from platelets isolated from normal and DS subjects.
    • Thin layer chromatography was used to separate individual phospholipids.
    • A thin layer chromatogram scanner measured fluorescence for quantitation.

    Conclusions:

    • Platelet phospholipid composition does not appear to be a major factor underlying the reduced Na+/K+ ATPase activity in Down syndrome.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms behind altered enzyme activity in DS platelets.
