Intracameral sodium hyaluronate effectively treated ciliary block glaucoma after surgery when medical treatments failed. This viscoelastic injection maintained anterior chamber depth and normal intraocular pressure in all patients.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Glaucoma Surgery
  • Anterior Segment Surgery

Background:

  • Post-surgical complications in glaucoma management can include flat anterior chamber.
  • Ciliary block is a potential cause of flat anterior chamber, often unresponsive to initial therapies.

Observation:

  • Six chronic glaucoma patients developed a flat anterior chamber post-Molteno device implantation, trabeculectomy, or revision.
  • These cases lacked hypotony, ciliochoroidal detachment, pupillary block, or wound leaks.
  • Standard medical and laser therapies for ciliary block were ineffective.

Findings:

  • Intracameral injection of sodium hyaluronate was administered to affected eyes.
  • All six eyes achieved and maintained a full anterior chamber and normal intraocular pressure post-injection.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Intracameral sodium hyaluronate is a viable treatment for refractory ciliary block glaucoma.
  • This approach may prevent the need for more invasive surgical interventions.
  • Viscoelastic agents offer a valuable therapeutic option in managing specific glaucoma surgical complications.
