Summary

Inhaling platelet-activating factor (PAF) did not cause bronchial hyperresponsiveness in healthy individuals. This study found no significant changes in airway reactivity after PAF administration, suggesting it doesn't induce asthma-like symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of inhaled platelet-activating factor (PAF) on bronchial reactivity in normal subjects.
  • To determine if PAF induces bronchial hyperresponsiveness.
  • To assess changes in airway function following PAF inhalation.

  • Six healthy subjects inhaled cumulative doses of 400 micrograms of PAF.
  • Forced expiratory flows (FEF) were measured during PAF inhalation.

    • PAF inhalation does not appear to alter airway reactivity in the short term.
