Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pediatric Medicine
  • Vascular Neoplasms

Background:

  • Pyogenic granuloma (lobular capillary hemangioma) is a benign vascular tumor.
  • It commonly affects skin and mucous membranes, presenting as an easily bleeding papule.
  • Understanding its pediatric presentation is crucial for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze clinical characteristics of pyogenic granuloma in children.
  • To investigate the natural history, treatment outcomes, and recurrence rates.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of surgical interventions in pediatric cases.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 128 pediatric patients treated between 1991 and 2001.
  • Review of clinical data, treatment modalities, and follow-up outcomes.
  • Focus on shave excision with electrocautery for uncomplicated cases.

Main Results:

  • The majority of pediatric patients had uncomplicated pyogenic granuloma.
  • A single shave excision and electrocautery was the primary treatment.
  • No recurrences were observed, and good cosmetic results were achieved.

Conclusions:

  • Shave excision and electrocautery is an effective treatment for pediatric pyogenic granuloma.
  • This method offers a low recurrence risk and favorable cosmetic outcomes.
  • Management of pyogenic granuloma in children can be straightforward with appropriate intervention.
