Summary

Genetic markers Rh and acid phosphatase (ACP) show distinct associations with myopia severity. Low myopia links to the Rh system, while high myopia is associated with acid phosphatase. Further research is needed.

Area of Science:

  • Genetics
  • Ophthalmology
  • Human Physiology

Background:

  • Myopia, a common refractive error, has complex genetic underpinnings.
  • Previous studies suggest potential genetic associations with myopia, but specific markers require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between specific genetic markers, Rh blood group system and acid phosphatase (ACP), and different levels of myopia.
  • To determine if these genetic markers correlate with low myopia (≤ -6 D) versus high myopia (> -6 D).

Main Methods:

  • Genotyping of Rh and acid phosphatase (ACP) in two patient groups: low myopia (n=214) and high myopia (n=124).
  • Comparison of marker frequencies with a control population using statistical analysis.
  • Assessment of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for genetic marker analysis.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A significant association was found between the Rh system and low myopia (p < 0.05) compared to controls.
  • No significant association was observed between the Rh system and high myopia (p > 0.1).
  • A significant association was identified between acid phosphatase (ACP) and high myopia (p < 0.05), but not low myopia (p > 0.25).

Conclusions:

  • The Rh system (chromosome 1) is associated with low myopia.
  • Acid phosphatase (ACP) (chromosome 2) is associated with high myopia.
  • These findings suggest distinct genetic influences for different myopia severities, warranting further DNA-based research for precise identification.
