Summary

Diabetics show increased platelet activity, particularly those with peripheral occlusive arterial disease (POAD). This heightened platelet release reaction, indicated by elevated beta-thromboglobulin (beta-TG), occurs even in early diabetic angiopathy stages.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between in vivo platelet activity and diabetic macroangiopathy.
  • To measure plasma beta-thromboglobulin (beta-TG) concentrations in diabetic patients with and without vascular complications.

Main Methods:

  • Radioimmunoassay was used to measure plasma beta-thromboglobulin (beta-TG) levels.
  • Study included 55 diabetic patients and 27 healthy controls.
  • Peripheral occlusive arterial disease (POAD) diagnosis was confirmed by Doppler ultrasound and arteriography.

  • Mean plasma beta-TG concentrations were significantly higher in diabetics compared to controls (p < 0.001).
  • Diabetics with POAD exhibited the highest beta-TG levels (106.50 +/- 52.65 ng/ml).

Conclusions:

  • Diabetics exhibit an increased platelet release reaction and enhanced in vivo platelet activity.
  • Elevated platelet activity is particularly pronounced in diabetic patients with POAD.
  • Increased platelet activity may be an early indicator of diabetic angiopathy, preceding clinical manifestation.
