A rare case of amoebic psoas and liver abscesses is presented in a young woman with a history of Campylobacter infection. This is the first reported instance of an amoebic psoas abscess in the last two decades.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Tropical Medicine
  • Medical Parasitology

Background:

  • Amoebiasis, typically caused by Entamoeba histolytica, commonly leads to liver abscesses.
  • Psoas abscesses are usually bacterial, with rare parasitic origins reported.

Observation:

  • A 28-year-old woman with a history of dysentery and Campylobacter infection developed both psoas and liver abscesses.
  • Diagnostic imaging confirmed the presence of multiple abscesses.

Findings:

  • Microscopic and/or molecular analysis confirmed the amoebic etiology of both abscesses.
  • A comprehensive literature review revealed no prior documented cases of amoebic psoas abscess in the past 20 years.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known clinical spectrum of amoebiasis.
