Giant lipomas, though initially benign, can relapse and undergo malignant degeneration. Early detection and monitoring are crucial for managing these rare retroperitoneal tumors.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Retroperitoneal tumors pose significant surgical challenges due to their location.
  • Lipomas, a common type of soft tissue tumor, can rarely present as giant masses.

Observation:

  • Four cases of giant lipomas (4.5-7.5 kg, >15 cm diameter) in the retroperitoneum are presented.
  • These tumors were in close proximity to vital organs, complicating surgical extirpation.

Findings:

  • Post-operative recovery was good, with initial benign histopathology.
  • However, 3 out of 4 cases experienced relapse within 2-4 years.
  • Relapsed lipomas showed malignant degeneration originating in the fibrous component.

Implications:

  • Giant retroperitoneal lipomas require long-term surveillance due to relapse potential.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Malignant transformation of lipomas, even after initial benign diagnosis, is a critical concern.
  • Surgical and pathological evaluation must consider the fibrous component for potential malignancy.
