Summary

Monitoring liver function tests (LFTs) can help predict metastatic uveal melanoma. Changes in alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase levels, even within normal limits, are key indicators for early detection of liver metastases.

Background:

  • Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults.
  • Liver metastases are the most frequent cause of death in uveal melanoma patients.
  • Early detection of liver metastases is crucial for timely intervention and improved patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate trends in liver function tests (LFTs) prior to the detection of liver metastases in uveal melanoma patients.
  • To identify which LFTs are most predictive of developing liver metastases.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective, comparative, observational case-control study.
  • Inclusion of 307 uveal melanoma patients diagnosed between 1988-1998.
  • Analysis of LFTs and liver imaging in 30 metastatic patients and 80 controls.
