Background:

  • Pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD) is a progressive corneal thinning disorder.
  • Intacs are intra-corneal ring segments used to correct refractive errors.

Observation:

  • A 42-year-old male with early PMD underwent bilateral Intacs implantation.
  • The procedure, typically for myopia, involved inserting two 0.45 mm thick segments nasally and temporally.

Findings:

  • Post-Intacs implantation, uncorrected visual acuity improved from counting fingers to 20/200.
  • Best spectacle-corrected visual acuity increased from 20/50 to 20/25.
  • Corneal topography showed significant improvement.

Implications:

  • Intacs implantation shows promise for managing early pellucid marginal degeneration.
