Summary

Early arthritis patients in the Austrian Registry show significant improvement in disease activity and potentially reduced radiological progression with early treatment. Further research aims to develop predictive algorithms for better diagnosis and therapy.

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Clinical Research
  • Inflammatory Arthritis

Background:

  • The Austrian Early Arthritis Registry (EAA) tracks patients with inflammatory arthritis of less than 12 weeks duration.
  • Data from 375 patients and nearly 2000 follow-up examinations are available.
  • 182 patients with at least one year of follow-up have been evaluated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate treatment outcomes and disease progression in early inflammatory arthritis.
  • To assess the effectiveness of early intervention in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).
  • To explore the development of predictive algorithms for early arthritis.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal follow-up of patients enrolled in the Austrian Early Arthritis Registry.
  • Diagnosis of RA using cumulative American College of Rheumatology (ACR) classification criteria.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Assessment of disease activity using Disease Activity Score 28 (DAS28) and radiological progression.
  • Main Results:

    • 65% of evaluated patients were diagnosed with RA; 15% had undifferentiated arthritis.
    • RA patients experienced a significant decrease in mean DAS28 from 5.5 (high activity) to low disease activity.
    • 52% of RA patients achieved a DAS28 < 3.2 at one year; radiological progression appeared less severe.

    Conclusions:

    • Early treatment in the EAA cohort leads to significant disease activity reduction in RA patients.
    • Early intervention may mitigate radiological progression in early RA.
    • Collaborative analysis of serological data could lead to improved diagnostic and therapeutic prediction algorithms for early arthritis.
