Summary

Adolescent major depressive disorder (MDD) is linked to hippocampal abnormalities. This study found reduced hippocampal volume in teens with MDD, suggesting developmental impacts on brain structure in early-onset depression.

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) used to measure hippocampal volumes.
  • 17 adolescent MDD subjects (13-18 years) compared with 17 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.

  • Significant hippocampal volume differences found between MDD and control groups (P = 0.006).
  • Abnormalities were more pronounced in the left hippocampus (P = 0.001) than the right (P = 0.047).

  • Provides preliminary evidence of hippocampal abnormalities in early-onset depression.

  • Suggests further research with larger sample sizes is warranted.
