Summary
Mediastinoscopic treatment successfully managed a subcarinal bronchogenic cyst in a 50-year-old man. This approach offers a safe therapeutic option for select patients with anterior bronchogenic cysts.
Area of Science:
- Thoracic Surgery
- Gastroenterology
Background:
- Bronchogenic cysts are uncommon congenital anomalies affecting the mediastinum and lung parenchyma.
- Subcarinal location presents unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
Observation:
- A 50-year-old male presented with a subcarinal lesion identified via CT scan.
- Initial mediastinoscopy was performed for diagnostic evaluation of the soft tissue density lesion.
Findings:
- Histopathological analysis confirmed the lesion as a bronchogenic cyst.
- The cyst was successfully treated via mediastinoscopy, involving drainage and application of a sclerosant agent.
Implications:
- Mediastinoscopy serves as a valuable tool for both diagnosis and treatment of anterior bronchogenic cysts.
- This technique offers a safe alternative for patients unsuitable for repeat surgical interventions.
