Background:

  • The tongue's complex functions are supported by muscular and neural structures.
  • Detailed neuroanatomical maps of the lingual nerve's topography within the tongue are lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a detailed neuroanatomical depiction of the lingual nerve's topography and branching patterns in the human tongue.
  • To investigate neuronal interconnections between the lingual and hypoglossal nerves.

Main Methods:

  • Postmortem human tongues (n=5) were stained using Sihler's stain for enhanced nerve visualization.
  • Detailed analysis of the lingual nerve's trunk, main branches, subdivisions, and interconnections was performed.

Main Results:

  • The lingual nerve enters the tongue posterolaterally with medial and lateral branches.
  • Significant interconnections were observed between lingual and hypoglossal nerves.
  • A higher density of nerve fibers was found in the lateral tongue compared to the midline.

Conclusions:

  • This study presents the first in situ detailed topography of the human lingual nerve and its branches.
  • Confirms lingual-hypoglossal nerve connections and reveals a high density of innervation in the lateral tongue.
