Patients undergoing cataract surgery prefer block anesthesia over topical anesthesia and oral sedation over intravenous sedation. These findings suggest a need to align anesthesia strategies with patient preferences.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Anesthesiology
Background:
- Cataract surgery is a common procedure.
- Anesthesia management strategies vary, impacting patient experience.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate patient preferences for different anesthesia strategies in cataract surgery.
- To compare preferences for block versus topical anesthesia.
- To compare preferences for oral versus intravenous sedation.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional, clinic-based study was conducted.
- Patient preferences for anesthesia management were assessed using a 0-100 linear rating scale.
Main Results:
- Patients showed a preference for block anesthesia over topical anesthesia (approximately 8 points on the scale).
- Oral sedation was preferred over intravenous sedation by a similar margin.
- 72% of subjects preferred block anesthesia when offered the choice.
Conclusions:
- Patient preferences lean towards block anesthesia and oral sedation for cataract surgery.
- Current anesthesia offerings may not align with patient desires.
- Consideration of patient preferences can enhance the surgical experience.
