Summary

Non-asthmatic rhinitis patients with bronchial hyperreactivity (BHR) show subtle small airway changes. Further monitoring is needed to understand the long-term clinical significance of these findings in rhinitis patients.

Background:

  • Rhinitis is linked to abnormal airway function and increased bronchial reactivity.
  • Bronchial hyperreactivity (BHR) in rhinitis patients increases asthma risk.
  • Factors associated with BHR in rhinitis remain unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare airflow rates, bronchial, and nasal resistance in nonasthmatic rhinitis patients with and without BHR.
  • To assess the relationship between these parameters and methacholine bronchial reactivity.

Main Methods:

  • 66 nonasthmatic allergic rhinitis patients were divided into BHR-negative (Group 1) and BHR-positive (Group 2) groups.
  • Pulmonary function tests, methacholine provocation, and rhinomanometry were performed.

  • Groups were matched for age, gender, illness duration, and smoking status.
  • Main Results:

    • Small airway function tests (FEV1/FVC, FEF25-75, FEF50, FEF75) were significantly lower in the BHR-positive group.
    • Specific airway resistance (sRaw) was higher in the BHR-positive group and correlated negatively with small airway parameters.
    • Nasal resistance did not differ between groups and showed no correlation with BHR or airway resistance.

    Conclusions:

    • Nonsasthmatic rhinitis patients with BHR exhibit mild but significant small airway alterations.
    • Clinical and functional follow-up is recommended to determine the long-term importance of these small airway changes.
