Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disease of the central nervous system.
  • Ocular manifestations in MS can precede neurological diagnosis.

Observation:

  • Eighty-nine patients with MS were studied, with 24 newly diagnosed.
  • Ophthalmologic examinations, including three-mirror contact lens exams, were performed.
  • Two patients presented with vitreoretinal tractions and periphlebitis before neurological MS symptoms.

Findings:

  • One patient with known MS exhibited neovascularizations, vasculitis, and vitreous hemorrhages.
  • High-dose steroid therapy stabilized the retinal condition in one patient.
