Summary

Highly trained cyclists with exercise-induced hypoxemia showed increased leukotriene E4 (LTE4) levels after strenuous exercise. These elevated LTE4 levels did not correlate with significant changes in pulmonary function.

Background:

  • Strenuous exercise can induce hypoxemia in highly trained individuals.
  • Leukotrienes (LT) are inflammatory mediators implicated in respiratory responses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate plasma and urinary leukotriene E4 (LTE4) levels in highly trained cyclists with mild exercise-induced hypoxemia (EIH).
  • To assess changes in pulmonary function following strenuous exercise in this cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Nine highly trained (HT) and five untrained (UT) subjects performed a 30-min exercise bout.
  • Plasma and urinary LTE4 levels were measured before and after exercise.
  • Pulmonary function tests and blood gases were assessed.

  • HT cyclists experienced a mean drop of 15 mmHg in partial oxygen pressure during exercise.
  • Post-exercise, DLCO decreased by 7.5%, with no significant changes in FVC or FEV.
  • Urinary and plasma LTE4 levels significantly increased in HT cyclists post-exercise, but not in UT subjects.

Conclusions:

  • Strenuous exercise triggers increased LTE4 release in highly trained cyclists with mild EIH.
  • The observed elevation in LTE4 levels was not associated with significant pulmonary function impairment.
