Laparoscopic upper pole heminephrectomy is a safe and effective procedure for treating ectopic ureters in duplex kidneys. This minimally invasive approach offers patients rapid recovery and good clinical outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Duplex kidneys with poorly functioning upper pole moieties often require surgical intervention.
  • Upper pole heminephrectomy is the standard treatment for such conditions.

Observation:

  • This study retrospectively reviewed three patients undergoing laparoscopic upper pole heminephrectomy for ectopic ureters.
  • Presentations included lifelong urinary incontinence and recurrent pyelonephritis.

Findings:

  • Laparoscopic upper pole heminephrectomy was successfully performed in all three patients via a transperitoneal approach.
  • Mean operative time was 198 minutes, with two patients discharged within 24 hours.
  • One patient experienced a urinary leak, successfully treated with embolization.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Laparoscopic upper pole heminephrectomy is a feasible and reproducible technique for ectopic ureters.
  • The procedure provides the typical postoperative advantages of laparoscopic surgery, including faster recovery.
