Summary

Hyperthyroid patients have lower plasma homocysteine levels than healthy individuals. Treatment normalizes thyroid function, increasing homocysteine and decreasing creatinine clearance, suggesting a link between thyroid status and homocysteine regulation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate plasma total homocysteine concentrations in hyperthyroid patients before and after treatment.
  • To compare homocysteine levels in hyperthyroid patients with a healthy control group.

Main Methods:

  • Measured plasma homocysteine, lipids, renal function markers, vitamin B12, and folate in 13 hyperthyroid patients and 11 controls.
  • Calculated LDL cholesterol and creatinine clearance.

  • Treatment of hyperthyroidism leads to increased homocysteine levels and reduced creatinine clearance.
  • Changes in renal function, specifically creatinine clearance, may partially explain the altered homocysteine levels in hyperthyroidism.
