Background:

  • A 16-year-old male presented with decreased vision 3 months after blunt ocular trauma.
  • Examination revealed a symptomatic optic pit with serous macular detachment.
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed inner retinal schisis and outer retinal detachment originating from the optic disc.

Findings:

  • Visual acuity was 20/30 in the affected eye.
  • OCT confirmed schisis-like separation of the inner retinal layers and outer layer detachment.
  • Kinetic ultrasound demonstrated an attached Choquet's canal at the optic pit.

Implications:

  • This case suggests that optic pits may predispose individuals to schisis-like retinal detachments following blunt ocular trauma.
  • Prompt recognition of optic pits and associated retinal changes is crucial for appropriate patient management.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the exact mechanisms and long-term outcomes of traumatic optic pit-related retinal detachments.
