Background:

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a complex condition affecting many women.
  • Sexual functioning is an important aspect of quality of life, yet often overlooked in CFS research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate sexual functioning in female patients diagnosed with CFS.
  • To compare sexual function and fatigue levels between CFS patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 35 female CFS patients and 36 healthy female controls were assessed.
  • Fatigue severity was measured using a validated fatigue questionnaire.
  • Sexual functioning was evaluated using a dedicated sexual functioning questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • No significant increase in sexual dysfunction was observed in the CFS group compared to controls.
  • While controls showed negative correlations between fatigue and sexual desire/satisfaction, these were absent in CFS patients.
  • CFS patients reported significantly higher fatigue scores (24.8) than controls (11.9).

Conclusions:

  • Sexual satisfaction levels were comparable between CFS patients and healthy controls.
  • The findings suggest a potentially different perception or experience of fatigue in individuals with CFS.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the nuanced relationship between fatigue and sexual health in CFS.
