Background:

  • Early detection is crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the proportion of undiagnosed uveal melanomas in patients evaluated by optometrists or ophthalmologists.
  • To assess the effectiveness of routine eye examinations in detecting uveal melanoma.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective observational cohort study of 433 ophthalmic oncology patients with uveal melanoma.
  • Analysis of patient data, including pre-diagnosis eye examinations and tumor characteristics.
  • Questionnaires were sent to patients treated between 1980 and 2000.

Main Results:

  • 37% of patients with newly diagnosed uveal melanoma had a prior eye examination within a year where the tumor was not detected.

Conclusions:

  • Current screening efforts for uveal melanoma may not be sufficiently effective, indicating a need for enhanced diagnostic strategies.
